Sudden death of my cat

Evening everyone,

My 6-and-a-half-year-old cat passed away suddenly yesterday. She seemed perfectly fine, and I didn't notice any symptoms (she was purring and playing as usual). When I went into my bedroom, I found her lying on my bed with her eyes open. There was no sign of anything being wrong in the flat; she had eaten and used her litter tray as normal.

I had noticed over the last few months that she was sneezing now and then, and she was being sick about once every fortnight. For a few years, she had sometimes been breathing a bit heavily when she was playing. I took her to the vet about a month and a half ago for her booster jab and to mention all of this. She examined her and didn't find anything, but told me to change her brand of dry food, which I did.

Has anyone else been through something similar? Do you think such a sudden passing could be due to a heart condition?

Thank you for your replies, I'm absolutely devastated...

Hi, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

I also lost my cat yesterday morning, right in front of me... after looking it up online, I’ve realised it was likely cardiac arrest because he passed away within 15 minutes. I thought it was a seizure at first since he had a history of them, but it didn’t look like any of his previous fits. I could see he was struggling to breathe but there was nothing I could do; I couldn’t get through to the out-of-hours vet and it all happened so fast... my partner saw him just an hour before and he seemed perfectly fine, at least on the surface. I truly feel for you in your grief.

Hi, the same thing happened to my 6-year-old cat this Monday, 20/01/25. She went out as she usually does, and the next day she was found dead in a neighbour's garden. According to the vet, there were no signs of poisoning; she still looked perfect, and the vet thinks it was cardiac arrest. It's so hard to accept because we weren't expecting it at all. I'm completely devastated; she didn't have any symptoms, nothing at all. It's just horrible for a cat who was only 6 years old. She was the best cat in the world, so sociable and cuddly, with a beautiful coat 😭😭😭😭😭. It's so hard to cope without her. I keep telling myself she's going to come back, and I'd give anything to go back in time and hold her tight one last time, as I didn't get the chance to say goodbye. It's heartbreaking.

Hi there, the same thing happened to my daughter’s little cat, the first one she adopted when she first moved out into her own place. She was a young cat, full of life, and then she was gone in seconds. She didn’t have any time to suffer. My daughter had a post-mortem done because she was worried for her other cat, and it turned out she had a heart condition; there hadn’t been any warning signs at all. It was heartbreaking for her and I really feel for you, but what matters most is the life she had with you, however short it was. Thinking of you.

If she was on your bed, there’s a very good chance it was a heart attack or a stroke. If she’d been in pain, you would have found her huddled away in a corner. It must have been very sudden and she wouldn't have suffered. Thinking of you – it’s always so heartbreaking to lose your little companion, especially so suddenly, but at least she had a wonderful life and was well-loved.

Hi everyone, Thank you for all your kind messages. I really hope she didn't suffer. Reading through some of the other stories here, it makes me think it might have been an underlying heart condition that went unnoticed. The vet is due to call me tomorrow, so I’m hoping I’ll find out a bit more about why she passed away so suddenly. It’s going to leave such a huge void... She had a short life, but it was a wonderful one and she was so incredibly loved and spoilt.

    Hi,

Sudden death in cats can be caused by many things: cardiomyopathy (such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), heart failure, blood clots, lung problems, heartworm, toxins… the list is long. Sadly, some causes of sudden death aren't clinically observable, even by vets…

Please take comfort in knowing that there was nothing more you could have done if the vet didn’t pick up on anything during the clinical exam. What's more, cats passing away this way usually suffer very little.

    Thinking of you,

    Jeanne

Not quite, it's all too easy to lose a pet. But it’s a real blow for their human. Life is fragile and there’s nothing you can do about it...

Hi, I also suspect it might be a heart issue, as they often aren't detectable just by the vet listening to their chest. It’s always devastating to lose a pet, but it must be such a shock to come home and find they’ve passed away. Sending you strength.

I'm thinking it might be more of a lung issue?
