Strange symptoms

Hi everyone,

I'm getting in touch because my cat has been showing some strange symptoms:

- He is swallowing every few seconds (his saliva)

- His purr sounds very metallic... much more so than usual

- He coughs every now and then, as if he’s trying to clear something from his throat...

- He’s stopped meowing like he used to... (he normally meows constantly when I'm at home, but now there's nothing)

Other than that, he is eating well... but he's less lively than he used to be...

I was thinking it might be some kind of pharyngitis or laryngitis... but I'm not really sure...

I’m in two minds about taking him to the vet... simply because I end up there every single time something is slightly off (every month, easily) and I’ve realised that it's often not for much (I worry far more than is necessary!). Plus, the vet herself told me not to worry about every little thing...

So, do you think this is serious? Have any of your cats had these same symptoms at some point? Should I see how it goes for a few days before taking him to the vet?

Thanks for your help,

Nico

It’s best to see a vet, as she’s probably got a sore throat.

I had exactly the same problem as you, Nico. I took my girl to the vet the first time and he wasn't really sure what was causing it, but he was certain her throat was irritated, so he put her on antihistamines for a week and the cough cleared up. A month later it happened again, so it was the same drill—more antihistamines—and she’s been fine since then. Seeing as she’s been bringing up bile and hairballs over the last few days, I reckon that’s what was irritating her throat. I’m giving her malt paste and brushing her every day with a really effective brush (a FURminator) to stop her swallowing too much fur (and hair, as she eats human hair too!).

I still think a cough is a serious symptom though, so a trip to the vet is definitely needed.
