Strange behaviour during playtime

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member of this forum for a few weeks now and I think it’s a really lovely community.

I’ve got an eighteen-month-old female cat; she’s doing great and is absolutely adorable.

However, there’s one thing I’d like to get your thoughts or comments on. Ever since she was a tiny kitten, whenever my children or I play with her, she can’t help but—I’m not quite sure how to describe it—hiss or spit. Basically, she hisses every single time she catches the toy, almost like a sort of emotional overload. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen this kind of behaviour in a cat during play; she also growls sometimes if we play for too long, no matter what toy we use.

She isn’t aggressive at all otherwise, it’s only when she’s playing. And she clearly enjoys it because she keeps coming back to the toy every time.

It must just be her personality, but I was wondering if any of you had ever come across something similar.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Lol, I’ve got a proper little moaner and a right chatterbox! Still, as long as they’re sweet you just get on with it – at least it keeps things lively.

YEAH, SAME HERE! MINE ALSO GROWLS DURING THE ZOOMIES.

Anyway, I’ve got a right little pest who whines, meows and moans about absolutely everything—sleeping, eating, playing—all day long whenever he wants something. Sometimes I get what he’s after, sometimes I haven’t got a clue.

I still love my little terror, though.

Hi everyone, my 4-year-old girl growls and grumbles when she’s playing. At first, I was worried she might snap at the kids, so I’d tell them to leave her be, but she was always the one coming back to play! Turns out she’s just a proper little moaner. She grumbles about everything now—when we tell her "no" or when we pick her up—but she’s actually so gentle and loves a cuddle. We’ve got used to it now; she’s just a chatty little thing lol.

Yeah, definitely, that’s what toys are for. I think she’s just getting over-excited, but if I stop playing the moment she starts, I’d basically be finishing as soon as I’ve started! :p

I’ll see how it goes over time; I reckon she’ll learn to control herself, we’ll see. She’s quite a unique cat, but that’s why I love her—she’s totally different from any other cat I’ve known up until now.

Hi, Some cats reach peak levels of excitement during play, including some intimidating behaviour. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, but she might not be getting enough play sessions with you, which leads to her getting overexcited when she does play. Personally, I’d stop playing when she gets into a bit of a state, just to let things calm down. The main thing is that she isn’t showing aggression towards her humans; the toys, however, are there to be battered—it's their sad fate...
