Something stuck to my cat's bottom

Hi everyone,

Sorry about the photo I’m about to post, but I’m looking for some advice. I went to the vet the day before yesterday about a cough, and I took the opportunity to mention that my cat had a bit of poo stuck to his bottom.

Something stuck to my cat's bottom

It’s the little black thing on the right in the photo. (By the way, you need to tilt your head to the right to see it properly as the picture is sideways). She told me it wasn’t poo. She thinks it might be an anal gland that’s slightly protruded because apparently my cat isn’t grooming himself properly.

While that’s possible, I’m a bit puzzled. I’ve tried softening it with a damp cloth and even tried to scrape it (he won’t let me, which is fair enough, and the thing is bone dry!)... my cat’s behaviour hasn’t changed; he’s eating and playing, though I’ve maybe noticed his poos are smaller than they used to be. She also said it could be the start of an abscess, but she didn’t seem convinced, and obviously, neither am I. I didn’t want to push the point as I think she thought I was being an over-anxious owner. But he’s had this thing for two weeks now!! It doesn’t seem to be bothering him that much, though. Plus, when he tenses up, the thing disappears into a fold—it’s so annoying, haha.

Has this happened to anyone else here?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

My cat has always had this and I've never managed to get a straight answer from the vets about it... on top of that, he's always got poo stuck to his bottom.

    Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed the exact same thing with my cuddly cat, who’s two and a half. I tried washing it, but it definitely won't come off. At first, I thought it might be some kind of worm or a tick, but looking closer, it goes back inside when she contracts her anus. It seems more like a haemorrhoid in humans, like a protruding vein as some of you mentioned. I’ll check in with the vet if it gets any worse or if her behaviour changes, but she seems perfectly fine for now. Based on your comments, it sounds like there’s nothing to worry about. Thanks, and I’ll be sure to keep you all posted if I find out anything else.

    Have a lovely day

A vet's diagnosis would be welcome!

Dragoon, I’m just going to be blunt here—please don’t take this as an attack or a judgement, but what you’ve done is very risky. We aren’t talking about a bit of debris caught in the fur; this is some kind of lump, mole, or wart near the anus, which means it’s right by the internal organs... Please, don’t encourage home treatment. I mean this with all due respect. I don’t have enough information to know whether you made an informed decision or not, so I’m not judging you, and I really hope your cat is doing okay.

No, it definitely wasn't a bit of poo because it was attached to the outside of the cat's bum. I'm not sure what it was, but there've been no issues since I took it off.

Are you sure it's actually a poo and not something else?

Evening, my cat had the exact same thing. Rubbing it didn't do anything at all. So, desperate times called for desperate measures. With my son's help to keep him steady and make sure we didn't hurt him, I used a pair of tweezers to get it out. It worked 👍. The texture of this black "lump" reminded me of an old blackhead 😒 and it even left a little hole behind where it was attached, just like when you squeeze one out. Anyway, it wasn't easy but it worked 👍. I'll keep an eye on how it looks over the next few days and let you know if I see anything concerning. Hope this helps.

If it’s not coming off like that... not even a tiny bit, and if the cloth isn't getting dirty, then it could be a small lump in the folds of their anus. It isn’t necessarily serious, but the best thing would be to have a vet take a look at it.
