Questions after neutering

Hi everyone, my 5-month-old kitten was neutered on Saturday and I have a few questions.

Despite being neutered, he is still getting erections. I'm aware he won't be able to reproduce, but if he's still having them, could he still be interested in females and wander off looking for them? Second question: how long after the op did you wait before letting your cat back outside? And finally, my vet told me to start him on dry food for neutered cats in a month's time, but I'm wondering if that's okay for his growth, especially as I've still got a 13lb bag to get through... thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, he’s had erections since he was a kitten. When he’s really happy, his little willy gets all pink and pokes out :-) . I was wondering how long I can keep giving him his kitten dry food for, as I’ve got a massive bag of it, and is it actually necessary to switch to food for neutered cats afterwards or is just standard adult food enough?

That’s surprising. I’d never heard of a neutered cat having erections before!

Regarding your second question, I think he can go out straight away, as he’ll be less tempted to wander off. We let ours out immediately and noticed he was much less likely to roam.

Mind you, because he wasn't quite as bold, he did tend to get bullied by the other local cats (the ones who were still intact! :-)). At one point, he didn’t want to go out anymore.

As for the dry food for neutered cats, I’ve been giving him that ever since he was neutered, but it hasn’t stopped him from putting on weight. I'm afraid there’s no miracle cure for that, except maybe cutting back on his portions since he’s less active now.

Thanks for your reply. I’m already giving him grain-free kitten dry food, but I wanted to know how long I should keep him on it now that he’s been neutered, without him risking getting too fat. It’s a bit of a worry if being castrated doesn’t stop those urges; I thought the whole point of getting them done was so they wouldn’t go chasing after the females or wander off too far...

    Hi,

1: Yes, that’s perfectly normal. Neutering doesn't prevent erections and it doesn’t completely get rid of their urges. Especially since it’s still early days for yours; the hormones stay in their system for several weeks or even months.

2: I’ve no idea on that one as I’ve never had an outdoor cat, sorry.

3: ‘Sterilised’ or ‘indoor’ dry food is mostly just marketing. Once he’s outside, he won’t exactly be hunting special sterilised mice! 😁 As much as possible, you should just avoid poor quality dry food—the stuff with low meat content and lots of cereals etc. :)
