Need help - my cat's injured his nose

Hi everyone,

I'm really worried and I'm planning to take my cat to the vet first thing on Monday. I'm so anxious and I often come to this forum for advice, so I thought maybe you could reassure me or give me some early thoughts on what it might be.

I'm actually away from home at the moment and my sister is looking after him. I'll be back from my trip on Monday morning and will be taking him straight there.

His name is Nairobi. When my sister got home last night, she noticed his nose was raw and looked infected.

But yesterday morning when I left, I said goodbye to him like I do every morning and his nose was fine... he must have injured himself during the day, but I can't imagine how, or maybe it's something more serious.

This morning his nose looks a bit less infected (as she's been cleaning it with some Betadine) but it's still just as raw.

Do you have any idea what might be wrong with him?

Thanks in advance

Hi there, my cat had calicivirus, so he was kept away from the other cats for two weeks and put on a course of treatment. What exactly is wrong with your cat? Mine had a really raw nose and bright pink patches on his gums and tongue.

Hi, my cat has exactly the same thing! I took him to the vet but unfortunately she said she didn't have a clue and that I should go back if it gets any worse. I don't know what to think and I'm really worried. Could you please let me know what the outcome was for your cats!

Hi everyone, My cat caught calicivirus; she was kept away from my other two cats for 20 days, had a steroid injection and daily medication, and I had to disinfect the sore with Betadine. My cat doesn't even go outside... but one of my others does go out as she was a stray abandoned on my estate... she's probably the one who brought the virus home, or we might have even brought it in on our shoes... she’s all better now. Definitely book an appointment with the vet and check if your cat has any small ulcers on their tongue.

    Hi there,

My cat has the same kind of sore. Would it be possible to find out what yours ended up having? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, yeah, that’s what I did. She wasn’t eating her dry food, it must have been hurting her to crunch it, but she managed to eat her wet food so that’s a relief... I really have no idea how she managed to do that to herself.

Disinfect the wound by gently dabbing it with some Betadine—the yellow bottle. If you haven't got any, use some saline solution instead...

Leave it uncovered and just keep an eye on him... as long as he's still eating, it's not too serious.

Hi there, my cat has exactly the same thing today. How is your cat doing now? What did you end up doing? Mine is an indoor cat too, so I can’t see how she’s managed to do this to herself... Thanks in advance for any advice. Plus, with it being a bank holiday, trying to find a vet is a real nightmare...

    Hi there,

Don't rack your brains trying to work out how he did it, we'll never know. Just keep cleaning it gently, without rubbing. It’s only superficial, nothing too serious.

Please keep us posted, I don't think it's anything too serious either.
