My kitten keeps playing with my feet under the duvet

Hi everyone,

I adopted a three-month-old kitten a week ago and he's settled into the house really quickly; he's already explored every nook and cranny. He's eating well, drinking, using his litter tray, purring, sleeping on my lap, and comes (mostly) whenever I call him—basically a happy little kitten (◍•ᴗ•◍).

However, there’s a bit of a problem. I had to have him in my bedroom a few days ago because I had guests staying over, and I expected him to be quite calm, as he usually is. BUT NO CHANCE! At bedtime, he starts playing with my hair and nibbling my legs under the duvet, which he never does when they're out in the open. I couldn't find anything about this online, so I'm turning to this forum for help.

So, my question is, how do I get him to understand that those are my legs under the covers and not a toy (╥﹏╥)?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi, I’ve banned my kitten from the bedrooms. If he does go in, it’s only because I’m in there doing something, and then I put him back out afterwards.

Tervilles, I’m the same, I always stick my feet out from under the duvet but there’s always a pesky mosquito that takes the opportunity to bite the top of my foot... 😁

If you don't mind, you could always try just leaving your feet uncovered. That’s what I do to keep mine in one piece with my little monster... and besides, it’s quite nice having cool feet. 😁

My older girl used to do it too, but she stopped around 6 or 7 months. Hang in there!

😁 All that’s left is to ban him from the bedroom (I do that in the summer anyway)!

Well, if this goes on for another 11 years, I’m in for a long haul!

Alright, thanks, I'll give that a go tonight before I head to bed.

My girl, who’s over 11 now, still does it. She loves playing with my feet, so in the winter evenings under the duvet it’s fine, but at the moment with just a thin sheet, ouch!!! She also plays with my hair—kneading it, chewing on it—and she catches my hand as well. She huddles up against it and rubs her whiskers on me; basically, I’m her toy. 👌 Then, when she’s properly worn out, she snuggles up on my pillow between my head and the headboard and purrs away. I have to admit, sometimes I find it hard to get to sleep 🤷

Evening, For a cat, something moving while hidden, or even just making a lump under the covers, is incredibly exciting. Your legs aren't interesting when they're visible, but if they move under the sheets, they’re prey to be hunted. It’s just their hunting instinct coming out, and cats keep this throughout their lives during playtime. It’s not a behavioural problem, and you won’t be able to change his natural attraction to things moving under a sheet. The idea is to tire him out properly in the evening by playing with him for a good while, using fishing rod toys or feather teasers, until he’s absolutely knackered. You could also offer him some wet food before you go to bed. Fatigue from playing + digestion = a few hours of peace and quiet.
