My cat keeps moving his water bowl

Hi everyone,

I bought a double bowl for my cat—one side for his dry food and the other for water.

But for the past few weeks, he's been pawing at it. I did some research and read that some cats really don't like having their water right next to their dry food. So, I kept using the double bowl for the dry food and got him a separate bowl for his water, which I put on the opposite side of the room. Despite that, he's still moving it. I got up this morning and the bowl was right back next to the food. He'd moved it about 2 metres! 🙄

As a result, he's getting water everywhere! 😡

How can I get him to stop doing this?

Thanks in advance! 😁

Hi, maybe you could try using a water fountain. Cats generally love them (my girl took to hers really quickly, anyway) and they’re heavier than a standard water bowl.

Hi there, Mine used to do that all the time. I solved the issue by sticking a large bowl to the floor with double-sided tape. Inside that, I place a smaller stainless steel bowl which I can easily lift out to change the water. It works a treat—no more issues!

    Hi,

This is a fairly common issue with cats and it can sometimes last for a while. In the meantime, one of the first things you could try is getting a heavier water bowl that he can't nudge around. A wider bowl might do the trick, as he’d find it much harder to move.

Also, to stop your kitten from wanting to play with his water, you could try putting some of his favourite toys nearby to distract him. Things like a cat tree, feathers, balls, or even a puzzle feeder for his dry food... This should help him focus his attention elsewhere and gradually break the habit.

    Best regards,

Hi there, I see your cat is still young; it's all just a game to him. Mine used to do the same. I bought a double stainless steel bowl in a stand specifically for his water; because of the weight, he couldn't nudge it about anymore, though he'd still dip his paws in. He eventually stopped doing it as he grew up. Hang in there, it's only a matter of months!
