My cat keeps biting my kitten’s neck

Evening all,

I’d like some advice regarding my cat’s behaviour. I adopted a two-month-old kitten yesterday, and at first, things weren't going very well—they both had arched backs and the older cat was growling.

Since this morning, it’s been a bit better; they’re sniffing each other and no longer arching their backs. However, the cat is constantly trying to sniff the kitten, and whenever he gets the chance, he bites him on the neck while making little noises. I’m a bit worried, so I keep separating them, but I don’t understand why he’s doing this.

I forgot to mention that the cat is a 2-year-old male.

If anyone could shed some light on his behaviour so I can understand what’s going on, that would be great.

Thanks

Hi there, Is your adult male neutered? Is the kitten male or female? Why has the kitten been separated from its mother at only 8 weeks old? That’s clearly not long enough for proper behavioural socialisation. Your adult cat is in his own territory, so it’s normal for him to be very curious about the newcomer and to assert his dominance by taking him by the scruff of the neck. As long as he isn't actually hurting the little one, just let them get on with it. If the kitten starts crying out loudly, separate them for a few days; keep the kitten in one room with all his essentials and give the adult cat a piece of bedding with the kitten's scent on it.
