My cat has a bald patch on his back right leg. What could it be?

Hi everyone,

My one-year-old cat has had a bald patch on his back right leg for a few months now. At first, from reading various forums, I thought it might just be an insect bite, but as the fur isn't growing back, I'm starting to wonder. The patch doesn't seem to bother him or cause him any pain, and the skin itself looks healthy.

Does anyone know what it could be? I've attached some photos to my post.

Thanks in advance,

My cat has a bald patch on his back right leg. What could it be?

    Please???

It’s likely just an issue caused by some rubbing; see your vet for a check-up if necessary.

Same here, but he’s losing fur on his neck. My mum says not to worry or go to the vet, but I’m sure it’s serious. Can anyone tell me if it is?

Hi there, my cat has this too. Basically, when his anal glands are bothering him (they can get blocked and be quite hard to empty), he literally sits on them; sometimes he even scoots along in that position to try and empty them. You can express them yourself, but it smells absolutely foul and you have to be careful because the area can get infected.

Over time, it leaves a bald patch on the back of his hind legs.

Mine has always sat slightly tilted back ever since he was a kitten. It’s nothing to worry about as long as there’s no obvious infection. Taking him to the vet just to have his glands emptied is a bit pointless; it’s pricey and you’d end up going all the time.

    Hope that helps.

Hi there, Our little one is showing the same symptoms, with symmetrical bald patches on his back legs. Could you let me know what the diagnosis was for your cat? Many thanks.

Hi there. I adopted a Siamese kitten at two months old last June. He’s almost a year old now and I’m seeing the same thing on his back legs and very slightly on the tops of his ears. Could you let me know what you found out in the end? Thanks in advance for your help, Beatrice

Hi, what did your vets say? Mine’s got the same thing.

Yes, thanks, I'll book an appointment!

There's a hole on each of his back legs, in the exact same spot on both (coincidence?). So I just thought it was down to rubbing.

My kitten had a bald patch on its neck as well, but at the appointment the vet told me he must have rubbed against something that pulled the fur out. It’s starting to grow back for mine now. Mention it to your vet just to be sure—even a quick phone call and they'll be able to tell you.
