My cat Bijou has a UTI

Hi everyone!

I'd really appreciate some help as I've got a bit of a situation to share. Since last Friday, Bijou has been having urinary issues. He’s been squatting to have a wee all over the place, but he only manages to pass a few drops. He’s just huddling in his corner and seems too scared to move in case he has an accident. On top of that, he's constantly licking himself, which I’m sure is making matters worse.

On Monday, I took him to the vet, and they gave him an antibiotic jab that's supposed to last for two weeks. They also gave me some tablets called Scopalgine and some therapeutic dry food. On Tuesday, I managed to get a tablet down him with a bit of a struggle, but then disaster struck the next day: I gave him his pill and... he wouldn't stop foaming at the mouth! He was gagging to the point of bringing up some blood (I think he must have bitten his tongue); basically, those tablets really don't seem to agree with him! And since this morning, we’re back to square one – he’s dribbling little drops everywhere again! What should I do? Should I take him to another vet (especially since the last visit cost me around £95!)? Or should I just wait and see if it clears up and stop giving him those tablets? Please help, my cat is clearly in pain!

Here we go again! Same old story! Bijou is "squatting" all over the place, very, very frequently, but in larger amounts! Since we’re taking Fripouille to the vet tomorrow, we’ll give them an update and see what can be done! I'll keep you posted...

I’ve read through all your messages. It’s true that this vet is pricey, but Bijou felt at ease there (for the first time!). This has been Bijou’s first day feeling better, even well. No struggling to go for a wee; Bijou was back to his usual self, nice and comfy, snoozing on the sofa and even on my lap (which is very rare!). He’s eating, sleeping and drinking, but unfortunately for him, it’s nearly time for his tablet! Love to you all and Happy New Year 2011!

I agree with dellys. Plus, a med that only starts working after 12 days? Sounds a bit dodgy, doesn't it? By then, the poor little thing might have developed stones.

£95 for a simple check-up (plus meds) for a common case of cystitis!!!!

That vet must be funding some very posh holidays with those prices....

And why prescribe a medication that has those side effects for cats when there are alternatives without those drawbacks?

I’m tempted to tell you to get a second opinion today (since tomorrow is a Bank Holiday followed by Sunday), but I understand if you want to try and trust this vet. However, I’d strongly advise you to look up the details for an out-of-hours vet right now, just in case you need them over the weekend.

Keep a close eye on your cat because urinary issues are often much more serious for males.

Just a quick update! My friend gave the vet a ring. It turns out the injection takes 12 days to kick in; it helps clear up the infection in his urine. As for the Scopalgine tablet, Bijou won't be getting out of it—the reaction he had is actually quite common for plenty of cats in this situation! Since we’re taking Fripouille to be neutered next Wednesday, if Bijou isn’t doing better by then, we’ll take him back too. For now, the main thing is that he isn't passing any blood.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but you should at least get a second opinion from another vet over the phone for now. Explain the symptoms, the tablets he’s on, and everything that’s happening as a result. If they tell you the same thing, you’ll have to try and carry on, but it really takes two of you to give them to him so he doesn’t struggle too much, choke, or end up biting you. Good luck, keep us posted!!!
