My cat Bijou has a UTI

Hi everyone!

I'd really appreciate some help as I've got a bit of a situation to share. Since last Friday, Bijou has been having urinary issues. He’s been squatting to have a wee all over the place, but he only manages to pass a few drops. He’s just huddling in his corner and seems too scared to move in case he has an accident. On top of that, he's constantly licking himself, which I’m sure is making matters worse.

On Monday, I took him to the vet, and they gave him an antibiotic jab that's supposed to last for two weeks. They also gave me some tablets called Scopalgine and some therapeutic dry food. On Tuesday, I managed to get a tablet down him with a bit of a struggle, but then disaster struck the next day: I gave him his pill and... he wouldn't stop foaming at the mouth! He was gagging to the point of bringing up some blood (I think he must have bitten his tongue); basically, those tablets really don't seem to agree with him! And since this morning, we’re back to square one – he’s dribbling little drops everywhere again! What should I do? Should I take him to another vet (especially since the last visit cost me around £95!)? Or should I just wait and see if it clears up and stop giving him those tablets? Please help, my cat is clearly in pain!

Bijou is finally back home – he arrived earlier this afternoon!!! As it turns out, he’s got to go on therapeutic dry food (Specific Light) and has a 7-day course of tablets. Grrrrrrrrrrr! He’s really not a fan of tablets: this evening we gave them to him crushed up in something he loves, but I reckon in the long run we’ll have to put them straight into his mouth. I’m already dreading tomorrow morning!

I called late this morning and the vet told me it would be around £215 to £260. I’d really like to pay in two instalments, but I only have cash (no chequebook). Because of that, I didn't actually ask what their policy is in those cases.

Myosotis, there’s always a way to pay in instalments – But just be careful; when this happened to one of my cats, the vet tried to charge me "admin fees" for spreading the cost. I refused as it’s actually not allowed.

Hi! Wishing Bijou a speedy recovery. I hope the bill isn’t too steep, but then again, money is no object when it comes to our pets, lol :)

We went to see Bijou at the vet's yesterday. He’s wearing a cone to stop him from pulling out his drip. He was in much better spirits and everything is going well. He’ll be coming home sometime on Thursday. The vet is taking his catheter out today but is waiting to see if he pees normally. Bijou won’t be having dry food anymore; he'll be on special wet food instead. I can’t wait to have him back, I really miss him! Although I’m not exactly looking forward to the bill!!!!! lol

Myosotis, it was the same for one of my cats. Since then, I only give them dry food from the vet – the over-12s have a different kind of dry food.

Above all, stick to his special diet and nothing else; it’ll help prevent any relapses.

For now, Bijou has to stay at the vet's for 48 hours for observation. I rang them last night and getting the IV drip and the catheter in went well. He’s going to be on the catheter for 48 hours to help flush out the stone, then tomorrow the vet will take it out to see if he can wee normally on his own.
