Kitten wanting to eat my older cat's urinary dry food

Hi everyone. I’ve had a kitten for 2 months now – he’s 5 and a half months old and doing well. I feed him Royal Canin kitten food, and I also have an 8-year-old cat who has had urinary issues, so she’s on Royal Canin Urinary dry food.

The trouble is that the kitten practically refuses to eat his own food and really wants to eat my other cat’s dry food! I obviously try to stop him, even going as far as shutting him in a room alone with his bowl so he eats his own food, but it’s really annoying because it means he can’t have food left out all the time (free-feeding). I work, and while my boyfriend is often at home, he has to go to work sometimes too.

Do you think it’s bad if he eats my older cat’s urinary dry food?

Hi, as your kitten is nearly 6 months old, there’s no real need to keep him on kitten dry food anymore. Above all, get him neutered without delay; it’s all for the best for him (and for your own peace of mind). There’s no danger in a cat with no kidney issues eating urinary food. It works as a preventive measure in this case.

Yes, I’m planning to book an appointment for next month.

OK, thanks for all your replies.

Same here, all my cats are on urinary dry food even though only one of them actually has urinary issues; it can be given as a preventative measure. We haven't had any trouble with stones at all since they’ve been on this dry food.

    Hi there,

As your kitten is nearly six months old, there’s no real need to keep giving him kitten dry food anymore. Most importantly, get him neutered without delay; it’s all for the best for him (and for your own peace of mind). There’s no harm in a cat without any kidney issues eating urinary food. It would just be a preventative measure in this case.

Hi there! I'm not sure about a kitten as they have specific nutritional needs while they're still growing. But for adult cats, both of the vets I asked said it wasn't an issue. All three of my cats are on RC Urinary even though only one of them actually needs it, and we haven't had any problems for years. You could always give your vet a quick ring just to be on the safe side. I’ll give them a call tomorrow. Regarding the idea of putting him on the urinary food when he's older, I was planning on asking the vet anyway, but I've got my answer now! Thanks for your reply.
