How can I get this wound to close up?

Hi there, my cat had surgery for a nasty open wound. He had a lot of stitches that popped the very next day, which caused some heavy bleeding. I took him back to the vet and they put staples in this time, but they haven't held either. So now I'm left with a cat whose wound is only half-healed... To be fair, the cut was over 4 inches (10cm) long and in a really awkward place.

The top of the wound is on the mend (about 2 inches or 5cm of it is sorted), but the rest is another story. There is a gaping hole right on the joint behind his leg, so every time he moves, it pulls the wound apart and it just won't heal! Is there any way to get this closed up for good? Especially since I've already shelled out about £270 for all this...

You'll understand my worry better when you see the photo. 😕😕

It just goes to show that when they want to do a proper job, they can, but why didn't they do it straight away? Thanks for the update and all the best for the future with your little one. +1, couldn't have put it better myself!

Poor thing, three anaesthetics already. Mind you, they’ve fitted a zip this time 😉

You were right to lodge a complaint, because those "botched" operations are definitely not normal. That’s three times they’ve put him under anaesthetic now, which is no small thing, even if it’s safer than it used to be. Keep an eye on the wound; at this rate, they’ll be getting the sewing machine out next... 🤦 Have you counted the stitches?

I’ll admit I did have a bit of a moan, but it was mostly because I’m just generally fed up with everything at the moment 😅 For my cat! But they actually offered the gesture spontaneously; I didn’t even ask for it.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying the stitching is a masterpiece, but it’s holding up! 😋

Hi Sylvie, thanks for the update.

Basically, vets are great, they just need a few attempts to get it right...

But as far as I'm concerned, they wouldn't even make it through to the second round!😁

Good thing it didn't cost you a penny this time – did they offer that themselves or did you have to kick up a bit of a fuss?

Can you show us the fancy new stitches? ^^

Hi everyone, I’m back with some better news! My cat had to have surgery again (at their expense) and they’ve stitched him up once more but using a different technique. And this time it’s holding! 😻 He’s already doing much better; now we just have to wait for it to heal up completely before he can go back outside for some fresh air again 🤗

Just the one vet, who ran the practice as a husband-and-wife duo; she was actually quite good and really listened, but she had her husband perform the surgery on my cat’s eye (an enucleation) after promising me it would be fine when I’d suggested taking him to a specialist.

He botched the operation and when I kicked up a fuss, she admitted she’d never done one before and had panicked because it was the eye...

The worst part was that the husband wasn’t any more of an expert. 😠

I felt completely misled and, given the mess her husband made of it, she probably would have done a better job than him anyway...

Since then, for anything that needs a specialist, I go straight to a proper referral hospital.

I’ve dealt with 2 female vets and 6 male ones… and honestly, the women just couldn’t handle the stress. The way they spoke to us was awful and they weren't very gentle with the cats... Mind you, I’ve been told there are some great female vets out there, but I’ve yet to come across any myself.
