Cat behaviour after anaesthesia

Hi everyone,

My cats were admitted to the vet clinic this morning for blood tests, a wash, and an IV drip because they'd come into contact with some permethrin.

The blood results were good and I’ve just picked them up. They are completely out of it though. The male is a bit better than the female, probably because she’s a bit lighter.

They are moving around but very slowly, staggering, and every now and then they have their mouths slightly open and every little move is in slow motion.

Is this normal?

Hi, I took my cat to the vet yesterday. He has stones and was put under anaesthetic for an ultrasound, but since then he's barely eating or drinking. He’s completely listless.

I’m probably sticking my nose in where it isn’t wanted, and what I’m about to say might sound a bit like “armchair psychology”. My daughter is 24, so I hope you don't mind me being quite direct with you.

From reading your various threads, I get the impression that you feel the need to control everything, to do everything perfectly, and to understand and master every detail. But this “everything” has turned into “too much”, and it’s putting your cats’ health at risk — and your own as well.

Paradoxically, you also seem to doubt your own actions and need constant reassurance.

You’re anxious, bordering on paranoid, and it’s going to make your life a misery or lead to depression if you don’t learn how to keep things in perspective. The current situation with lockdown is probably making this mindset even worse.

If you think I’m onto something, please talk to your GP about all of this. Do it for the happiness and safety of your home, your cats, and your future children, but most of all, do it for yourself.

    😘

    - The third eyelid showing is a side effect of the anaesthetic, just like with some sedatives.

    - 'Going down the wrong pipe' is exactly the same for a cat as it is for a person. It’s just a bit of food going down the 'wrong way'.

    - A cat keeping its mouth slightly open after an anaesthetic isn't a cause for concern in itself. It's only if their breathing sounds very noisy (a 'rattle') that you should worry. Wait until tomorrow before you get concerned.

What does it mean when a pet's food "goes down the wrong way" after an anaesthetic? I really hope the issue with the eyelid isn't a neurological sign; how do you actually spot those kinds of symptoms, anyway?

What if they need a drink?

Yes, that’s the medicine in the photo.

I put it in their dry food and there we go, they've finished the lot.

I’ve used some saline for their eyes,

They’ve taken their prescribed tablets and are eating now; I gave the female 15g and the male 20g of dry food.

I don’t want to overfeed them.

Their eyes look white now when they half-close them, is that normal?

I’ll check on them later on,

Mind you, they usually meow when I talk to them, but not at the moment. Aside from the journey home, but that was more out of distress.
