Soup or no soup?

Evening all,

I'd like to know if it's possible to give my cat soup (at the right temperature, obviously) as a supplement to their Hill's dry food.

I'd also like to get your thoughts on Felix pouches; otherwise, what brands would you recommend?

Soup or no soup?

My girls absolutely love (and that’s an understatement) soup, and they’ve started snubbing their Hill’s. I make a soup with carrots, spinach and green beans—all with no added salt. Once it's blended, I take out about a small tub’s worth for them and then season the rest for myself. I also cook courgettes for them in the summer, salt-free. They’re crazy for it. It means they eat less dry food, which helps keep their weight at a healthy level. They also eat little cubes of beetroot and cauliflower. One of them will take any tablet if I coat it in tomato purée!

My main worry is that my cat, Matso, is quite poorly. He’s 15 years old, has no teeth left, and has an abscess in his mouth. It’s impossible for my lovely little ray of sunshine to eat anything he needs to chew. So, I’ve turned to soups – fish or meat-based – and he doesn’t mind a few vegetables mixed in. It also makes it easier to hide his meds if I crush them up finely.

Hi there, Cats don’t eat vegetables; they are carnivores just like all felines. Just dry food and pouches if you like, and of course, plenty of water available at all times.

I think it's fine to give them some; after all, it'll only provide them with vitamins :-)

    Lovely cat, anyway! :-)

I think if I gave my cats a spoonful, they’d lick it right up. But I wouldn’t give it to them every day as it’s too salty, and too much salt is bad for a cat’s system.

"Soup is good for cats" Cats are carnivores... if they like a spoonful or two, fair enough... but making soup for your dog... it's a load of rubbish...

Soup? Homemade then, and served lukewarm. Soup is great for cats; it provides them with veg (and all the good stuff that goes with it, like fibre) and water (which is brilliant for cats who don't drink much). Just stay away from shop-bought soup as it’s far too salty and can be full of additives that your cat doesn't need to be ingesting. So, soup is a yes, but make it yourself—don't bother peeling the veg, and absolutely no potatoes or onions. My cat loves his daily organic carrot soup, which I make for him every evening.

But of course, it’s not essential.
