My cat's reaction to meowing in videos [need advice]

Hi everyone, I’m posting here because something’s been really puzzling me about one of my two cats.

A year and a half ago, a moggy moved into my house (he was about two or three years old at the time). He was incredibly stressed and jumpy at the slightest noise or movement – I suspect he might have been mistreated when he was younger. He had scabs all over his body that just wouldn't clear up, and he was constantly licking himself whenever we stroked him, as if he were itchy. Anyway! He’s doing much better now – he's less timid, more affectionate, and the scabs are gone, although he still over-grooms a bit. Plus, he’s very friendly with other cats and loves to play (even if my female cat puts him in his place sometimes, haha!).

Anyway, that’s not really the point, but I wanted to give you some background so you might understand why he reacts the way he does to videos!

Whenever I play a video of cats meowing on my phone, he comes running (even if he’s at the other end of the house). He starts nibbling the phone – if we didn't stop him, he’d probably break it, haha! – then starts meowing back, scratching at the screen, nipping us, clinging to us, and even drooling on us! The strangest thing is that he does exactly the same thing with videos of dogs!

What do you make of his reaction? Do you think he’s worried? Is he scared? Or is he just happy?

Thanks in advance for your replies, and have a lovely day/evening!

Evening, thanks for your reply. No, it doesn't bother me at all, I just wanted to know the reasons behind this behaviour. I thought it was quite funny, but I was wondering if it was bothering him. I play with him every day! No issues on that front! Anyway, thanks for your help 👌 PS: Do you think those old scabs on his back could be down to stress?

Hi there, The behaviour you're describing isn't anything to worry about. It could be that he's just a super social cat who gets worked up as soon as he hears other cats or dogs. If his reaction is bothering you, the simplest thing is to just stop letting him hear those noises. It sounds like he has a lot of pent-up energy, so it might be worth playing with him for long stretches until he's completely worn out. It usually settles them down, at least for a while...
