My cat refuses to go to the toilet outside

Hi there.

As the title says, my cat won’t do her business outdoors. She actually comes back inside specifically to use her litter tray. It’s becoming a bit of a problem because her poos are quite smelly and she sometimes leaves little bits behind on the floor. (Of course, I’ll keep the litter tray indoors for the night.) She’s a female, roughly a year and a half old, and started going out about three months ago. She’s only outside for about 3 to 5 hours a day and doesn't go out at night. I also have a male cat who much prefers going outside in the neighbour’s garden 😝.

Does anyone have any tips on how to encourage her to go outside instead?

"I’ve got another male cat who prefers going to the toilet outside in my neighbour's garden."

I bet the neighbour absolutely loves that!!

Anyway, since the summer I’ve put the litter tray outside, keeping the same litter as the one indoors at first (scent and all)...

    he kept using it..

then I changed the litter, I put in some fresh plant-based stuff... for the last 3 weeks he hasn’t used it at all and just goes outside instead..

    Hi,

It’s definitely possible to put the litter tray outside, as suggested!

Cats are real creatures of habit and it can be tough to change their routine, which is why it's worth trying to find a workaround. If your cat prefers using her litter tray, moving it outside might encourage her to go in that spot.

However, there might be things outside that are putting her off, which could explain why she’s refusing to go outdoors: things like the presence of other animals (or even just their scent), or noises that are bothering her...

Regarding the smell of her poo, do make sure to check (or ask your vet to take a look if you’re in any doubt) that this isn't a sign of an underlying illness or some kind of digestive issue!

    Best regards,

    Alexia
