My cat keeps eating mice

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce my cat, Pipette. He was neutered when he was a tiny kitten, but he's still a really good hunter.

He catches mice, plays with them, kills them, and then actually eats them.

He does this almost every day.

He eats a lot but stays very slim, and today he's been sick for the first time.

Other than that, he seems fine.

Should I be worried?

Have a good day

Mine hunts and eats his prey, but he always leaves the mouse guts behind for me. I’ve no idea how he manages it, he eats everything else but the guts – absolutely mad!!! I always make sure to worm him, though, and I do take good care of my cat!

My cat is the same, he eats the mice he kills and then he’s poorly afterwards. I’m not sure what to do as he’s well-fed at home, and his sister MAYA hardly ever goes out – even when she does hunt, she doesn’t eat her prey.

    Hi there

You won't be able to stop your cat from eating mice unless you keep them indoors, which would be quite cruel since they're used to going out.

The only solution is to worm them regularly; it's best to have a chat with your vet for advice on this.

I see you have two cats, so you'll obviously need to worm both of them.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a way to stop my cat from eating mice. she’s just sicked up about ten worms that looked like tagliatelle, and the vet told us she’s getting them from the mice. Does anyone have any advice? (I live right by some fields).

Give the vet or the vet nurse a call about the medication. Depending on what they say about the tablets, you could try using some pill putty – it's a kind of soft, tasty paste that you wrap around the pill. It usually works a treat for getting them to take it.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your replies. :)

I found a natural dewormer at the shop where I usually do my weekly shop.

But I’ve noticed that they’re tablets.

How on earth do you get a cat to swallow them?

Or should I just head to the vet to get him dewormed?

    What do you guys do?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Have a good day

Yes, if the mice come from fields where pesticides are used, it’s harmful... I’m speaking from experience there... On the other hand, if he’s eating 'healthy' mice, it’s just part of being a cat, and being sick every now and then isn’t a worry, unless you actually notice other things that seem a bit 'off'.

As long as you worm them regularly, it isn't a problem.

Evening Sophie, it’s perfectly normal for your cat to catch and eat mice. Cats are natural-born hunters and you’ll never be able to stop them 👋
