I'd like to find out if my little kitten, who is only a day old, is a boy or a girl. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I’d lean towards it being a girl too... based on the following sketch!

As for handling very young kittens, it’s true that if you fiddle with a baby, a feral mum might move her litter... and then good luck finding them again. For a pet cat, I think it mostly depends on her environment and how much she trusts her humans. I once had a cat who’d just given birth in a cardboard box, and my dog Nouchka (a German Shepherd) would groom the babies as soon as they were born and help the mum look after them – it was a wonderful sight. In the evenings, when we went into the lounge, Nouchka would drag the box with the mum and kittens over to us by the fireplace. There was no way she was leaving the kitty family all alone in the kitchen. So cute!

Well, out of three votes, it looks like I’m the only one who thinks it’s a female... Fair enough. I’m a good sport. However, Ezimah’s advice to “not touch the kittens” seems completely wrong to me. Quite the opposite, actually—you should handle them as much as possible, gently of course, to socialise them. At least, that’s my take on it. No, Ezimah is right, you shouldn't touch the kittens at first because there is a real risk the mother will reject them if she doesn't like the scent.

You shouldn't handle them before they’re 10 days old. I didn't say never. My cat abandoned her kittens because they didn't smell of her anymore, so I know what I'm talking about, and anyway, there's no need to know the kittens' age that early on.

Careful! Make sure you don't touch the kittens too early; they might pick up your scent and the mum could end up rejecting them...

Anyway, I’d say it looks like a boy to me.
