Any thoughts on Premiere Meat Menu wet food?

Hi everyone,

After doing loads of research, I’ve finally found what I think is the perfect kibble: Amikinos.

However, I’m struggling a bit more with the wet food I give them as a supplement.

Up until now, I’ve been feeding them Gourmet Perle, but the ingredients are terrible. I’m having a bit of a crisis of conscience giving them top-notch dry food and then such poor-quality wet food on the side.

The pet shop sells a wet food range where the composition looks good to me, but I’d love to get some second opinions, as I can't seem to find any reviews for this range.

Analytical constituents:

Protein 11%, fat content 6%, crude ash 2.4%, crude fibre 0.5%, moisture 79%, calcium 0.33%, phosphorus 0.25%.

Composition:

42% chicken (hearts, 15% meat, livers), 16% turkey hearts, 10% rabbit meat, 1% minerals, 0.2% sunflower oil.

Moisture content

79%.

Additives per kg

Nutritional additives: Vitamin D3 200 IU, taurine 1500mg, manganese (manganous sulphate monohydrate) 1.4mg, zinc (zinc sulphate monohydrate) 25mg, copper (copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate) 1mg, iodine (calcium iodate anhydrous) 0.75mg.

What do you guys think?

11% protein is perfectly normal for wet food. You could look for ages for a wet food with 30% or 40% protein, but you’ll never find it because of the way analytical constituents are calculated—the moisture content takes up a huge chunk of that percentage.

There are ways to calculate the figures on a dry matter basis, but I don’t know how to do it myself.

That said, 11% is pretty standard, and protein isn’t the ONLY thing you need to consider in a cat's diet. Personally, I don’t overthink it when it comes to wet food; it’s usually much better quality than dry food anyway, and it helps keep them hydrated. I reckon these ones look fine, and I’ll actually try a few of them out for my own cat.

Hi, I’ve been doing plenty of research myself lately as well. I bought some tins of Premiere to try out, and the chicken, turkey, and rabbit was a massive hit. My cats wouldn’t touch the other varieties, apart from the beef and venison, but they weren’t exactly enthusiastic about it. The chicken, turkey, and rabbit tins have a nice colour and texture. There’s always less protein in wet food because there’s so much water. But on a dry matter basis, it’s more than decent.

And which wet food would you recommend?

There’s only 15% muscle meat in total in the wet food; it says so on the website, but it wasn't in the bit I copied and pasted here.

When you say you’re suspicious, what exactly do you mean by that?

I’ve compared the ingredients and analytical constituents of this wet food with other much more expensive brands, and I can’t see any massive differences.

I was planning on giving my cats 100g of wet food each per day, on top of leaving some high-quality dry food out for them to graze on.

Hi there, I find such a low protein level for a raw ingredient like chicken – especially when it’s listed as the main ingredient – a bit suspicious. Obviously, we’re not talking about the same quantities you’d find in a bag of dry food, but still.
