Kitten home alone: one room or free roam?

Hi everyone!

I’ve adopted a tiny kitten who's two and a half months old, and obviously when I have to head off to work, she’s left on her own.

At the moment, we keep her in the bathroom with her litter tray, some water, food and a whole load of toys ;) But as soon as I get back, she’s like a live wire! She zooms everywhere and gets into all sorts of mischief. We play with her as much as we can once we’re home, but I get the feeling it’s because she hasn’t been able to burn off as much energy as she’d like during the day.

So my question is: do you keep your kitten in one specific room all day or do you let them have the run of the whole house/flat? If you do keep them in one room, at what age do you let them roam everywhere?

We have loads of electrical cables (TV, consoles) so we’re worried that if she’s left alone, she might chew them and, even worse, get an electric shock :(

Thanks for your advice!

Laderkan, you can just let your kitten roam around the flat with a few toys, they’ll keep themselves entertained... You know what it’s like at the start, you’re never quite sure what to do, especially when it’s your first kitten... Try it out for a day... When you get home, you’ll soon see if they’ve been getting into much mischief lol... Plus, every cat is different; I’ve got a little six-month-old girl who’s completely different from my old cat Tigrette... 😁

When I first got Capucine, I was living in a big house but I had to keep her in the utility room (about 12 square metres, with a window) while waiting for my ex-husband to come and collect his fancy leather sofa. In the evenings, she was like a live wire. Then I moved into a small flat. At first, I didn't let her into the bedroom because of the carpet, but she was a total nightmare. From the moment I gave her access to the bedroom, she calmed down incredibly. Mind you, she does tend to get into more mischief when I'm actually at home. So, I think it’s definitely better to just give them free rein of the whole house.

What an idea!! I’d let him have free run of the whole house, poor little thing (I’ve got three and they’ve always been allowed everywhere).

I’m lucky enough to have a fairly large flat; and even if I don’t let them have the run of the whole place (I have to be careful as I’ve got dust mite and dust allergies, and I’d be devastated if I developed an allergy to cats!!), you still need to give them enough space to move around. A cat doesn’t just sleep and eat; plus, if they don’t burn off their energy during the day, your nights are going to be pretty restless!! From a very young age, I’ve got them used to not going everywhere; they’ve got things to play with, food, and places to sleep, and they aren’t unhappy because of it.

That’s great! She passed the test! Cats are so incredibly agile and it’s amazing how precise they are with their movements! Mine leaps about and doesn't even budge a single knick-knack. 😋

Well, she was much calmer when we got back. And we were surprised to see she’d managed to jump over our gate! She'd been roaming around the living room all day, but there was only one figurine on the floor and we didn't notice anything else suspicious!

So today, we’ve given her the run of the house, except for the bedroom ;)
