My kitten smells really strongly of poo

Hi everyone, I have a 2-month-old male British Shorthair and I’m having a real problem with him. He smells really strongly of poo whenever he gets out of his litter tray. It’s unbearable – every single time he’s finished, it smells awful and I’m forced to wash him, but the smell still lingers. I’m at my wits' end. To make matters worse, he climbs onto the armchair and then the armchair smells of poo too, so I’m constantly having to wash the blankets. I don’t know what to do other than bathing him. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone dealt with this before? Can you please help? He's a lovely kitten, but he smells terrible. Thanks in advance for your replies.

If he’s just getting messy because he’s stepping in his poo or crouching too low in it, then you’ll have to clean him up every time he uses the litter tray... Best of luck! He must not have learnt how to use the tray properly. :S

As for food, I used to use the same dry food (the stuff sold by the vet) and I’ve just switched after reading through the whole ‘feeding your cat’ section of the forum. You just have to try and make sense of all the info and help requests.

Hi there, In your last post you actually gave the reason for the smell yourself – it's because he's getting it on his paws (I once had a long-haired cat who did that a couple of times with his tail). Are his poos soft or runny? If they are, there's a very high chance it's down to his food. What was he eating before you got him? Maybe try switching back to that? Does he bury his poo? What kind of litter does he have?

Even though I’m a big believer in homeopathy and natural remedies, your kitten is still very young to be given activated charcoal, especially as you aren't yet certain of the actual cause.

Wait until you've seen your vet about it.

As for food, I'll go and find some links and get back to you shortly.

But I think it’s an issue with his food because every time he comes out of his litter tray, my kitten has poo all over the back of his legs.

For worming, I use Drontal. I’ve been using that brand for ages, ever since I got my very first cat, and I’ve never had any problems. Regarding the diet, you mentioned there are experts on here—what do I need to do on the site exactly, as I’m new? I’ve phoned my vet and booked an appointment, but in the meantime, a friend of mine said I could use a charcoal-based medicine.

Is this a wormer you bought yourself or was it administered by a vet? There are so many different types of worms that you really need to find the right treatment for the job. The dry food you’re currently feeding is full of grains; you might want to think about switching to a grain-free version. But before you do that, you should identify exactly which types of worms you're dealing with. A quick trip to the vet wouldn’t go amiss. As for the diet, there are several members on this site who are real pros and can give you some great advice on proper nutrition.

Hi, first of all thanks for such a quick reply. Yes, he was wormed on 22nd July, and as for his food, he’s eating Royal Canin kitten dry food.

Hi Mimimost, Has your cat been wormed recently? Intestinal parasites can certainly cause a bit of a foul smell. Then there's also the question of what you're feeding them.
