My cat is eating fur

Hi everyone,

For a few days now my cat has been losing little tufts of fur here and there and eating them with a passion!

I'd already noticed that she liked eating any dust bunnies she found, but now she's frantically devouring these little clumps she's shedding all over the place. Is it serious? Is it normal? Is it just "moulting" and maybe a way for her to get some vitamins or keratin back?

I've ordered a hemp oil product for pets from Zooplus for her skin and coat; I hope it'll be good.

Have a good day

Hi everyone, for a little while now my cat has been eating the small fibres from the rope she uses to sharpen her claws. She’s actually had an intestinal blockage in the past because of this very thing; she had stopped doing it for a while, but now she’s started again. I’m not sure what to do because she needs it to scratch and it’s part of her cat tree. Have any of you dealt with this kind of behaviour before? Any advice on what to do? Thanks for your help!

I'm brushing her every day at the moment and, judging by what others have said, it's definitely moulting season!!

He isn’t a long-haired cat, but anyway, my girls are domestic shorthairs and I brush them two or three times a week.

You need to brush her once or twice a week!!

Once a month is nowhere near enough!!

For long-haired cats, it needs to be every day!

Hi there, I’d say a cat like that needs brushing more than once a month.

Hi everyone and thanks for your replies. I brush her once a month, but I haven’t been able to find her brush for a few weeks now!! Even though her coat doesn’t look great, I haven’t noticed any bald patches. I’m going to give hemp oil a go; I’ve heard it works wonders!

    Hi there,

A cat doesn't need to eat its own hair.

Do you brush your cat? It helps them get rid of dead hair and 'detangles' their fur.

As Angeline said, cats already ingest hair while grooming themselves, which can lead to hairballs that are sometimes difficult to pass.

The vitamins, minerals, and nutrients a cat needs are found in a good quality diet.

Moulting is perfectly normal for a cat, but if you notice any bald patches, it’s likely a skin issue (like allergies...)

Hi, cats swallow their fur when they groom themselves, so I imagine if he smells his own scent on the fur on the floor, he's doing the same. I'm not sure if it's just down to moulting as I don't know this breed very well, but it's worth checking it's not something else.
