Tips for stopping cat litter getting everywhere?

Hi everyone,

Hope you’re all doing well.

Ever since Fluffy arrived, I’ve never tried to get him used to a "hooded" litter tray (the ones with a lid and door) because at the rescue centre he was always used to an open tray. I tried putting the lid on yesterday, but no luck – he’s far too scared of it.

However, every morning I wake up to find loads of litter scattered all over the house. It’s like he’s leaving a trail of breadcrumbs; I can literally track his every move! Does anyone have any tips to stop this? Or is it just something I’ll have to live with forever? ^^

I’ve tried using a litter mat, but honestly, it’s useless. It was a bit of a rubbish idea.

So, if you have any suggestions, I’m all ears. My poor feet would definitely appreciate it – I’m fed up with treading on it every morning! 😯

Hi, As Blue Cat mentioned, I think a high-sided plastic litter tray is the most practical option. If Fluffy is getting litter everywhere because it's getting stuck in her paw pads, you could also try switching to a litter with larger granules, like wood pellets. There are two main types of wood pellet litter: - Wood fuel pellets (the kind used for heating), which is the cheapest option and can be found in some supermarkets or DIY stores. Just watch out for dust, as some cats are allergic to it, though I’ve never had any issues with my own cat. - Wood pellet cat litter; the most affordable and easiest brand to find is Cat’s Best. You can find it in supermarkets or pet shops. Some of the Cat’s Best range is clumping.

    Hi there,

I agree with the previous replies; a larger litter tray with higher sides and a litter mat should stop him from getting it everywhere. You could also try a different type of litter that won't stick to his fur or get caught between his pads.

    Hope this helps,

    Hey Blue,

Yep, no hooded litter tray, I’ve definitely got the message. He certainly made that clear!

To be honest, I think he pees sitting down. His tray has quite high sides and I never see any marks on the wall or on the "sides" of the tray. I’m thinking about getting a plastic tub instead, but I’ll need to check the measurements first since his tray is tucked between the loo and the wall, and it’s a pretty narrow space.

    Hi Daolia,

NO, definitely don't go for a covered litter box; there's no need to put him under any unnecessary stress.

To stop litter being kicked over the sides, the best trick I've found is to buy those large plastic storage boxes (you can get them in the supermarkets or DIY shops) that are nice and big with high sides. This way, you avoid getting most of the litter on the floor. There’ll always be a tiny bit, though.

Plus, since Fluffy is a male, he might start peeing with his bum in the air (like my Oscar does), and in that case, you’ll really want those high sides. Not only do cats not mind a deep tray, but it actually makes them feel more secure (unlike having a lid). And the size of these bins is much more practical for a big lad like yours. I haven't used anything but these large storage boxes for about 15 years now.
