My kitten keeps suckling my earlobe – why?

Hi there,

My 2-month-old kitten suckles my earlobe when he's purring and wants a cuddle. He also rubs his nose against mine...

Is this normal behaviour?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Evening, I have a cat called Gribouille. Ever since I’ve had him, he’s been sucking my ear and I was just wondering if this is normal?

My kitten Oscar used to do this too but he’d stopped. Since I moved back in with my parents, though, he’s started up again. He keeps waking me up at ungodly hours and it really hurts, even though he puts his claws away when I tell him to while he’s kneading. I hate stopping him but I have to because it’s so painful. He’s also started peeing all over the place which is becoming a real nightmare, especially as I don’t always spot where he’s been when I get back from work. If anyone has any advice, I’d really appreciate it.

Haha, Titi used to do the exact same thing! He’d suckle on my earlobe, it was so sweet. Bini used to suckle on the crook of my arm—the inside bit, not the elbow (I’m not sure what you actually call that part! ^^). I think when cats haven't been properly weaned, they feel the need to suckle for comfort. I don't want to talk rubbish though, as I’m definitely no expert. Both of my cats weren't fully weaned and they both act like that.

He probably thinks you’re his mum, so he’s acting just like he would with his mother cat. It’s completely normal, so don’t worry at all! If it’s annoying you, though, just gently push him away; he might get the hint eventually – well, I hope so anyway. Best of luck!

My partner’s cat does the exact same thing to me and he’s only 4 months old lol! He used to always sit between my boobs and on my stomach, but he doesn't do it anymore now that I’ve had the baby, as he just falls off lol. So instead, he sits on the laptop keyboard when I’m on it just so I notice he’s there. He’s so cute, but it gets annoying pretty quickly because it makes the computer glitch out lol!!!

Is she still with her mum? If not, she might not be fully weaned yet, but it’s also possible she sees you as her mum (my 9-month-old cat does this too ^^).

Ah, see? I was right. You've got to be really gentle and patient with a cat.
