DEATH of my cat 8 days after being neutered

Hello everyone,

My cat Junior (a Birman cross), who was 8 months old, has just passed away 8 days after being neutered. The op went well and he recovered very quickly.

On the 7th day, I noticed he was less lively and was sleeping a lot. The following morning, the situation got worse; he was struggling to breathe and his heart was racing. I took him straight to the vet, who told me immediately that it was life-threatening. He didn't have a fever, but the lung X-ray showed his lungs were almost completely obstructed. Further tests were needed and he had to stay at the clinic.

Two hours after I got home, the vet called to tell me the situation was hopeless, that he was suffocating and that we had to help him go... And that’s how my little Junior left this world.

The vet’s explanations are a bit vague—pulmonary oedema, an undetected heart defect? Today I’m looking for answers and possible explanations.

I’m really counting on this forum to help me find some information.

I want to know if anyone else has dealt with such a tragic accident.

Thanks in advance,

Chamalia

Sorry, I know it’s a big question, but can you tell me how I can be sure my cat won’t die if I get him neutered?

    Good evening,

I’m not necessarily linking their death to the neutering, but I’m looking for some information or to hear from anyone who has been through a similar situation.

Thank you all for your advice and kind words. To answer a few of you, Junior hadn't been given any medication, and we didn't use any toxic products or aerosols. He was an indoor-only cat. My little Junior was a rescue kitten. Adopting him was a real no-brainer from the start, so I don't have any information about his parents. It’s true that a post-mortem would have been the best way to find out what took him... But when I went back to the vet's and held his little lifeless body, wrapped so beautifully in his favourite blanket, I was just overwhelmed by grief. I wasn't thinking clearly and didn't have the presence of mind to even consider it. Only eight days ago, he was still here with us... I miss him so terribly. From his short life (barely nine months), I’m left with all his love and the wonderful moments we shared. His absence is unbearable. I wish all your little four-legged friends a long and happy life. Treasure every single moment... Chamalia

    Poor little thing, RIP. 🤧

I don't think it was down to him being neutered; it might have been a genetic malformation or some kind of illness.

    Thinking of you. 😞

Have you sprayed the house with something like fly spray, or another toxic product that the cat has breathed in?

I might be wrong, but my vet once told me that my cat has a heart murmur, so when animals have to be put under for an operation, it can be more 'risky' for that reason?

This might be a silly question, but have you given him any medication at all? Even a very low dose?

Paracetamol poisoning (from things like Calpol or Panadol) can cause this, and it takes less than a single tablet to kill an adult cat.

Hi! That must have been such a massive shock for you! I really hope you get some answers, but I can’t give you any explanations myself as I just don’t know. Stay strong. I’ve just had my Snoo neutered a few days ago, and now you’ve got me worried!

Thank you, anyway. It certainly takes a lot of strength; Junior was the cat of my lifetime (the one I had always been looking for).
