DEATH of my cat 8 days after being neutered

Hello everyone,

My cat Junior (a Birman cross), who was 8 months old, has just passed away 8 days after being neutered. The op went well and he recovered very quickly.

On the 7th day, I noticed he was less lively and was sleeping a lot. The following morning, the situation got worse; he was struggling to breathe and his heart was racing. I took him straight to the vet, who told me immediately that it was life-threatening. He didn't have a fever, but the lung X-ray showed his lungs were almost completely obstructed. Further tests were needed and he had to stay at the clinic.

Two hours after I got home, the vet called to tell me the situation was hopeless, that he was suffocating and that we had to help him go... And that’s how my little Junior left this world.

The vet’s explanations are a bit vague—pulmonary oedema, an undetected heart defect? Today I’m looking for answers and possible explanations.

I’m really counting on this forum to help me find some information.

I want to know if anyone else has dealt with such a tragic accident.

Thanks in advance,

Chamalia

My little kitten passed away the very same evening he was neutered. He was only 8 months old, and I just can't understand what could have happened. He was such a lovely little guy.

    Evening,

My daughter has also just lost her cat following his neutering. Her little Guizmo passed away 6 days after the operation; apparently his kidneys couldn't cope with the anaesthetic. It’s so incredibly sad as he was in great shape beforehand and hadn't had any health issues at all.

    Good evening,

I don't think the death was linked to the neutering; I'm looking for some information and to hear from anyone else who has been through this situation.

I’ve just seen your post. My cat died four days after he was neutered. A vet (not the one who did the surgery) told me it was either septicaemia, or my cat had FIV and the operation triggered the blood poisoning to accelerate. That’s all I know. Of course, I felt so guilty about having him neutered, as he was doing so well before that. 😔

Poor little guy, he was so cute and seemed like such a sweet soul; it’s so sad that he’s gone like that.

    Thinking of you, Chamalia.

    Hi there,

Thank you for your kind message. I’m still struggling to come to terms with the loss of my little Junior, I miss him so much... My heart and mind are so full of his love, and I just don't have the emotional strength right now to take in a new little feline. I think only time will help me heal a bit.

Of course, if I ever come across a little animal in distress, I’ll help them and rescue them; I’ve always done that throughout my life and I’ll continue to do so.

Wishing all your little companions a long and happy life,

    Chamalia

I am so sorry for the loss of your cat; it’s such a heartbreaking ordeal to go through. Hang in there and try to take comfort in the thought that he’s in a better place now. When you're grieving, I find that the most helpful thing is often to focus on a new beginning—perhaps rescuing a cat from the RSPCA that's already been neutered, for example? Take as much time as you need and keep your feline friend in your heart. You have absolutely nothing to blame yourself for; life is just full of these unexpected turns. Take care!

Honestly, it wasn't the neutering that "killed" his cat, don't worry Jeanjeanlol
