South African animal shelter faces closure, leaving innocent lives in the balance

Founded in 2013, Shalom Animal Rescue Centre is a lifeline for countless abandoned, neglected, and abused animals in South Africa's North West Province.

Situated in one of South Africa's poorest provinces, the absence of nearby animal welfare organisations exacerbates issues of animal neglect and uncontrolled breeding in the area.

With the nearest SPCA located 250 kilometres away, Shalom Animal Rescue Centre fills a critical void in animal care, extending its services to Glaudina and its surrounding areas.

Joan Nel, the compassionate force behind Shalom, alongside her dedicated team, tirelessly devote themselves to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of animals in need.

Outreach and rehabilitation efforts

Driven by a desire to effect change, Joan initiated widespread outreach efforts, particularly focusing on the care of township dogs. Shalom's outreach initiatives encompass vital services such as feeding, veterinary care, sterilisation, and educational programs aimed at fostering responsible pet ownership.

Moreover, the center extends its compassionate reach to feral cat colonies and stray dog populations, implementing feeding and sterilisation programs to curb their proliferation.

Seeking support

Shalom Animal Rescue Centre's farm serves as a sanctuary for a diverse array of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, hedgehogs, and more. Here, animals receive the love and care necessary for their physical and emotional rehabilitation, with the ultimate goal of finding them loving forever homes.

However, the organisation faces a pressing challenge: securing permanent premises. With their current farm rented, Shalom needs to acquire a dedicated smallholding, offering ample space to accommodate their growing needs. Urgent fundraising efforts are underway to realise this vision and ensure the sustained operation of the center.

How you can help

As Shalom Animal Rescue Centre embarks on its quest for a permanent home, your support is invaluable. Whether through donations of funds or essential supplies, every contribution plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the welfare of animals in need.

Additionally, prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the center and explore the possibility of welcoming a furry companion into their homes.
