A few years back, Twinkie the Jack Russell managed to pop 100 balloons in 39.08 seconds and quickly became an internet sensation. Since then, the dog-balloon popping challenge has truly taken the canine world by storm.

Toby: the world’s fastest canine balloon popper!

Now, a Canadian Whippet who goes by the name of Toby has managed to take hold of the balloon-popping dog crown. He’ll now take pride of place in the Guinness World Records 2019 book for the ‘Fastest time to pop 100 balloons by a dog’.

But his talent was discovered on a whim when his owner Christie was taking him for his daily walk. Toby saw a balloon which had got stuck on a nearby fence, so she allowed him to go over and pop it.

She was amazed! Toby was able to burst the balloon incredibly quickly. As she’d already seen the viral videos, she decided that balloon popping would make a great hobby for her and her four-legged friend. They got practising right away.

Dedicated to the challenge

“I used a full board of balloons that would be used in the official record-attempt to practice popping once every three months,” Christie explained to Guinness World Records.

“But with smaller groups of balloons or single balloons, we would play all the time. We even filled up the outdoor swimming pool with balloons and let Toby swim around like a shark to pop them, which entertained the community kids.”

Christie used chants such as “pop pop pop” and “go go go” to encourage determined Toby. She also made sure to use blue or yellow coloured balloons – the colours most visible to dogs.

A double record breaker

Since then, Toby has broken the world record twice – first at 36.53 seconds, and then at an incredible 28.22 seconds.

“The official attempts were such a thrill. He has been a canine ambassador and community entertainer all his life. He was very accustomed to performing for a huge audience. It was a blessing to entertain the community and we were very proud to do so.”

Check out the record-breaking moment below! Congratulations, Toby and Christie.
