With his huge green eyes and heavy brow, Luhu looks like he's carrying the weight of the kitty world on his shoulders. The poor little guy looks crestfallen, doleful, inconsolable, as if his entire existence is defined by some nameless grief.
However, his owner, Maggie Liu, insists that Luhu is nowhere near as depressed as he looks. In fact, she says he’s a very friendly and happy cat.
Cheer up, Luhu!
So what's up Luhu? Why the long face?
Well, Luhu's despairing expression is actually a side effect from a previous eye infection. But don't worry, he's OK now.
Speaking to ABC news, Maggie Lui said:
"Luhu had eye infections when he was two weeks old. He got a pretty major operation on his eyes at that time and the sequelae is affected by his vision, so Luhu always opens his eyes pretty hard when he needs to look at something."
Maggie set up an Instagram page for Luhu, which soon racked up over 70,000 followers.
And although Maggie is used to people melting over Luhu's adorable expression in person, she never thought he'd become as popular as he has. "I put my cat's pics on Instagram just for fun, actually," said Maggie. "I never thought about Luhu getting so popular like this."
A cat is what a cat does
His Insta page shows Luhu doing all the things a cat normally does. But whether he's eating, resting, or playing, that expression never changes.
Maggie is keen to stress that Luhu is actually a very happy cat. He lives with his brother and sister, two little tabby cats called Barher and Bardie.
"They are all very friendly cats," said Maggie. "They never fight each other."
Given all the attention on Luhu, Maggie is keeping her other cats out of the spotlight.
As for Luhu, it looks like the “saddest" cat on Instagram is also one of the cutest.
