A Traverse City dog has celebrated as she watched her human sister, a four-year-old with cerebral palsy, walk unsupported for the first time

Abby, a Goldendoodle, is no stranger to struggle herself: the wool-effect doggo walks the earth with just three paws – the fourth was missing from birth. Together, Abby and Maya can now make their way around at their own good pace.
You’ll not see nothing like the Mighty Maya
"Mighty Miss Maya" Tisdale, human, was born four months early, and weighed under 2lb. Her fighting spirit kept her going against the odds. But before she reached her second birthday she was further diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy: a result of brain damage that “causes the muscles in her hips, legs, and feet to be tight or spastic” and made her “unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds, or walk without the use of walker,” according to her family’s Gofundme campaign. Through endless hours of therapy and specialist treatment, and through the determination to keep up with her brothers and play with her dog, Tisdale has made startling progress with her mobility. All the time, she strives under the shadow of potential deterioration due to the effects of spasticity.
A giant leap for dog- and girlkind
Following Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery, Maya was expected to progress towards walking unaided – but over months or years rather than the mere seven weeks that passed before she first strode across the living room carpet without her walking frame. The moment was captured on camera, and readers can see just how excited Abby the dog is to see her sister-from-another-mister’s brave new moves. “I’m walking! ... I’m walking! Yes! ... I even took a big step,” says Maya in the video, shared to Facebook by The Dodo. In terms of both courage and cuteness, it’s hard to pick a winner between Maya and Abby - her loyal companion, therapy dog, and playmate. Thankfully nobody needs to. They play as a team.
