Dog’s really are a man’s best friend - and they’ll clearly do whatever it takes to keep their families safe.
The pit bull hero
Sadie, a pit bull from Westchester Country in New York, is the newest doggy hero hitting the headlines.
Police were informed of a barking dog roaming around a local yard last Wednesday afternoon. When they got there, all they were expecting was a loose dog - but they were in for much more than that!
The dog ran and took the officers through several streets, and then led them back to the dog's residence into the backyard," police Lt. Lawrence Rotta said to ABC.
Sadie was determined to save her family
At the dog’s home, police noticed an open glass door and a broken fence. Something wasn’t right, but they couldn’t quite figure out what it was.
But Sadie was determined. She continued barking and encouraged the police to investigate. Wandering around the outside of the house, they noticed a strong gas odour coming from the basement window.
She saved her family from a tragic gas explosion
The fire department arrived and confirmed that gas was rapidly leaking from the family’s basement.
"The dog saved the house from a potential gas explosion and gas leak," Rotta said.
Inside, the team noticed blood and deep claw marks on the doors. Sadie had been desperately trying to escape and find help for her family - what a hero!
"It looks like she was trying to get out this window...She was determined to get out," said Serena Costello, Sadie’s owner.
Serena believes Sadie saved her life - and more importantly, the life of her 4-year-old daughter.
"She is a hero," she said. "She is our hero. It's just so out of character for her to do. She saved our lives. Yeah. Emotional."
