He weighed the same as a toddler, has more than his allowance of toes and is a natural show off. But this Illinois rescue cat didn’t have to wait very long to be lapped up and now he’s an online celebrity

The staff at Wright Way rescue shelter in Morton Grove announced on 15th August 2018 that they had brought in a ‘lazy’ and ‘high maintenance’ feline. Their Facebook post at the time read: ‘I am a seven-year-old polydactyl cat who is 25 pounds. I like to stand on my hind legs! This usually happens when I want food.’ One week later misfit ‘Bruno’ was adopted by Chicago couple Jason Bartlett and Lauren Paris.
Does having extra toes make it hard for Bruno to walk?
Bruno seems completely at ease with his polydactyly. It may even be an advantage when he performs his trick of standing on his hind legs, something Bartlett and Paris were particularly taken with. In fact, Bruno’s imperfections seemed not to matter to anyone who read the advert: shortly after it was posted the shelter received over 150 adoption applications. Recalling the moment she saw pictures of the chubby Chartreux, Paris is quoted by the Express & Star as saying: ‘There were two pictures of him standing on his hind legs, showing off his curvy body, and a fabulously written bio. There is no other way to put it, than to say – I freaked out at my desk. I just knew we would be a perfect match.’
Smitten staff at Wright Way reluctantly agreed to release Bruno from their care on the 21st August. Paris created an Instagram page shortly after Bruno ‘came home’ onto which, she posts pictures documenting such things as the cat’s weight loss and hind-leg antics. The page now has over 54,000 followers. ‘I am so happy to report that thus far, Bruno’s transition into our home has been seamless,’ Paris told the Express & Star. 'From the moment he stepped out of the carrier when we brought him home, he’s really seemed at ease. Incredibly affectionate and cuddly, constantly purring.’ ‘Bruno so far has exceeded our wildest expectations, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him as part of our family.’
