Behind this crazy news is the story of a 49-year-old Londoner, a single mother of two and threatened with eviction.

To prove how serious she was, she decided to marry her cat and even went so far as to organise a ceremony in a park in the British capital last Tuesday.

She told the SUN: “I can’t be without India. She is truly a sensation, she is so friendly and amazing. She is fundamentally the most important thing in my life after my children.”

“I pronounce you husband and wife”

Deborah lost her job last month and feared she would be evicted from her home in South London. She claims that landlords have forced her over the years to rehome two dogs, she desperately doesn’t want this to happen. This is why she decided to marry her cat India. She wants future landlords to know that she and India will never be separated.

Deborah and India got married in a civil ceremony surrounded by a few friends but no family.

Already separated from two previous dogs

In the past, Deborah was forced to part with her two Huskies after her then owner threatened her with eviction. She said: “It absolutely broke my heart! Your pets become part of your family and it was just absolutely devastating having to say goodbye to them.”

Now she doesn't want to lose another beloved pet. “I had nothing to lose and everything to gain so I married my cat!” Deborah said. “I recited vows under the universe that no man will ever tear myself and India apart.”

In 2017, when Deborah had to give up her two Huskies, she pleaded with her previous landlords to allow her to adopt another cat. They finally agreed and this is when India came into Deborah’s life.

Two years ago, the poor feline had to have a leg amputated after being hit by a car. And now, because Deborah is struggling to pay her rent, she anticipated another move and married India. Even though her friends call her "crazy", Deborah felt that uniting with her three-legged cat was the best way to show that she was "serious". She hopes that this union will save her from eviction.
