Twickenham-based dog trainer Niki French has surprised dog lovers the world over by launching the very first 'Don’t Walk Your Dog Day' on April 2nd.

Walkies aren’t for everyone

Indeed, Niki has been very vocal about the fact that not all dogs benefit from daily walks:

"It might come as a surprise, but traditional walks are a human invention and aren't helpful for many of our dogs. Contrary to popular belief, dogs with behaviour struggles can get more reactive or more excitable when we try to exhaust them through too much exercise."

According to Niki, dogs who struggle with reactivity or anxiety would benefit from skipping walks from time to time and instead playing brain games at home with their owners. This would not only allow them to get the mental stimulation they need, but also allow them to be in a calm and stress-free environment, and to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

Not just for anxious dogs

Besides, Niki reminds owners that not every day is a good day for walks. Some summer days are too hot, and some winter days too cold! In those cases, it’s also best to stay in with a couple of games, whether your dog likes taking walks or not.

Niki knows there are people out there who simply can’t walk their dogs every day - and she wants them to know they’re not alone, and they’re not judged.

What do you think of this revolutionary idea? Good, or bad?
