Flat-coated Retrievers come in solid black or solid liver. Baxer, the winner of Crufts Best In Show 2022, is a lovely example of a liver dog. 

Flat-coated Retrievers were bred to retrieve foul after hunters would shoot them down. Even though that’s not their primary use today, they love gundog training!

Flat-coated Retrievers, much like Labradors, were really bred to retrieve ducks in water. Thanks to their webbed feet, they are very strong swimmers.

Flat-coated Retrievers are a relatively rare breed, often overshadowed by the more popular Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever. It is thought that there around 44,000 Flat-coated Retrievers currently in the UK. 

Flat-coated Retrievers are also known as ‘Flatties’. 

With a great sense of humour and puppy-like personalities, training a Flattie can be quite a challenge. But they are very intelligent dogs, and once they’re trained, they make wonderful companions.

Like many Retrievers, Flatties are social dogs who are friendly with everyone and absolutely adore children. This makes them good family dogs for active families.

Flatties love a bit of fuss and if they think they’re not getting enough, they’ll let you know!

Flatties are very active dogs who need  between 1-2 hours of intense exercise a day, plus mental stimulation as well. These dogs are not for the faint of heart, and need available owners.

Flat-coated Retrievers are happier outside. They love water, mud and they’re also a fan of licking things - whether it’s your face or your sofa. If you like to keep your house clean and tidy all the time, this is not the breed for you.
