The world’s most famous dog show finally returns after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are super thrilled. Dogs, dog owners, dog lovers and spectators will be heading to Birmingham to watch sporting events, obedience and beauty contests.

For 131 years, Crufts has been bringing together the most fascinating animals and the most caring owners. From laughter to tears Crufts brings so many emotions to each and every one. With moving stories, inspiring people, and beautiful relationships, Crufts is definitely a place to go!

For this occasion, we wanted to reflect on all Best in Show champions and we’ve listed the dog breeds which have won the most this title.

What is Best in Show: The history behind this award

On top of the Young Kennel Club Ring, obedience competitions, individual breed judging, dog activities and the Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme, there is one award which is much anticipated: Best in Show.

The title of Best in Show was first awarded in 1928 to Primley Spectre, a fawn Greyhound. Previously, Best in Show was called “Best Champions” and was awarded from 1905 to 1914. The first winner of the “Best Champions” award was Ch. The Stable Mite, a Pomeranian.

How are the finalists of Best in Show selected?

Dogs who will compete in the Best in Show category would have been selected prior to the event. Dogs will begin the competition by competing against others of the same breed, gender, age and previous class wins (Veteran, Special Puppy, Special Junior, Yearling, Post Graduate, Mid Limit, and Open). Then, once a dog from each gender is selected they move onto the next step. The male dog and female dog will compete again for the Dog and Bitch Challenge Certificate (CC). The two winners go head to head to determine the Best of Breed.

Once the best of each breed has been selected, they will be put in groups. In the UK there are seven Groups: Toy, Gundog, Utility, Hound, Working, Pastoral and Terrier. They will compete in each category and one dog will be selected to represent their category. Finally, on the last day of Crufts, the seven Group winners will compete and one winner will be awarded Best in Show.

Imagine how many winners they’ve been since 1905? We’ve put a list together of the dog breeds which have been awarded Best in Show the most. So which breed do you think will be our winner?

Let’s find out!
