Dogs tend to give birth to more than one baby at a time. However, a number this high is very uncommon and has broken a Guide Dogs UK record!

About a week ago, Guide Dogs UK introduced their followers to a very special litter of puppies.

The black and fluffy pups are the result of a mating between a German Shepherd female named Unity and a Golden Retriever male named Trigger.

Record-breaking litter of puppies

But the special thing about these puppies is not their looks nor their wit – it’s the mere amount of them! Indeed, although ultrasounds showed vets that Unity would probably have more than 9 puppies, nothing could’ve prepared them for the amount she actually had.

Two months ago, Unity gave birth to 16 puppies! That’s twice the amount of the average size of a German Shepherd litter! Unity is an absolute star.

Good news for Guide Dogs charity

Staff gave some of the puppies to foster families with nursing mums, to help Unity, who couldn’t possibly feed them all by herself. But she can be very proud – giving birth to so many puppies is a great help to the charity who have struggled to breed guide dogs during the pandemic. This litter alone is going to change so many lives!

The puppies are now ready to start the first part of their training in their foster homes.

We can’t wait to hear more about their journeys!
