For a lot of us, filling up the dog’s water bowl when it gets a little empty is all we have to do to keep our pets happy and healthy. But it’s actually a little more complicated than that.

A dog drinking too much water is a bad sign

Many vets and behaviourists have shared their opinions on the matter, reminding pet owners that they should regularly check how much water their pets are drinking, and how fast they’re drinking it.

If it’s hot and your pet is exercising a lot, then their water bowl may empty itself faster – true. But there could be other, much more serious reasons why your dog is drinking a lot. For example, a dog that empties his water bowl frequently may be suffering from diabetes, or a metabolic disease.

Keep an eye on your dog’s bowl

In any case, if your dog is drinking a lot, it is recommended that you see a vet as soon as possible. It could be nothing, but if your dog is indeed sick, best to nip it in the bud! Besides, excessive drinking could lead to hyperhydration, which can be fatal.

So keep an eye on your dog’s water bowl!
