Thousands of people abandon their pets every summer so they can go on holiday without constraints. This artist tried to shed a light on the problem.

French artist Nicolas Amiard created a series of drawings showing famous cartoon characters abandoning their beloved pets on the side of the road.

Why? To try and raise awareness about pet abandonment during the summer. While UK pet owners are quite good about bringing their pets along on summer vacation, other countries like Spain or France abandon from 50,000 to 100,000 pets every summer.

Pluto, Scooby-Doo, Snoopy and more

By showing well-known and beloved characters such as Mickey Mouse, The Mystery Gang, and The Simpsons abandoning their pets, Amiard hopes to shock the public into paying attention.

The featured dogs are all shown with their head and ears down, resigned as they watch their owners drive away without them. It’s hard not to feel a pinch in our hearts as we see some of our favourite childhood characters being forgotten by those they love.

What to do if you can’t take your dog on holiday

It seems inconceivable to responsible dog owners, yet it happens every year. Dogs are part of the family. If you can’t take them with you on holiday, leave them with a trusted sitter or friend while you’re away.

If your circumstances change and you can no longer properly take care of your pet, contact an animal shelter. They are always open to discussing safe rehoming options. Leaving a dog on the side of the road is never a good solution.
