We all know that cats are pretty amazing. But did you know that some felines can predict the results of international football tournaments?
Achilles the oracle cat
Achilles first found fame a few years ago during the 2017 Confederations Cup, where he correctly guessed the results of four matches. He then went on to test his predictive skills during the 2018 FIFA World Cup and again accurately predicted the results of four games. After his triumph, Achilles was named the best oracle of the tournament.
The blue-eyed, white-furred cat from St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum in Russia has been deaf since birth, and when he's not predicting matches, he's busy with his social work. As a therapy cat, Achilles regularly visits hospices, orphanages and retirement homes with his proud owner Anna Kondratyeva. Anna describes Achilles as a calm and easy-going feline who is quite happy to visit different places.
Fortune teller feline
While he does have several prediction successes under his collar, some of his later guesses did fall short of the mark. However, despite a couple of dips in his guessing game record, Achilles has been invited by the vice governor of St. Petersburg, Boris Piotrovsky, to predict the winner of this year's competition when St. Petersburg host three group stage matches and a quarter-final.
If you are wondering how Achilles makes his predictions, it all comes down to food. He is offered two bowls of cat food. Each bowl represents one of the countries participating in the matches and displays the country's flag. The bowl that Achilles chooses confirms his prediction.
Achilles is not the first animal to predict sporting results. Remember Paul, the octopus? His tentacles predicted Spain's victory in the 2010 World Cup Final!
Good luck, Achilles!
