Ex-President Barack Obama was the one to announce the sad news via his Instagram account.

Bo, who was with the Obama family for over 10 years, sadly passed away from cancer.

A heartfelt goodbye

Understandably devastated, Barack Obama wrote:

“Today our family lost a true friend and loyal companion. For more than a decade, Bo was a constant, gentle presence in our lives—happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and everyday in between. He tolerated all the fuss that came with being in the White House, had a big bark but no bite, loved to jump in the pool in the summer, was unflappable with children, lived for scraps around the dinner table, and had great hair. He was exactly what we needed and more than we ever expected. We will miss him dearly."

Bo became part of the Obama family in 2008, when Barack became President of the United States. He had indeed promised his two daughters that he would get them a dog if he won a victory. Once he did, he had no choice but to hold true to his promise. Senator Edward Kennedy was the one who gifted the adorable Portuguese Water Dog puppy to the family.

Despite the dog originally being for the girls, Bo created an incredible bond with every single member of the Obama family, dad included! As described in Barack’s post, Bo was a happy-go-lucky and friendly dog, making him popular with everyone he met! He accompanied his family on many White House missions, including hospital visits, trips on Air Force One, and even a meeting with the Pope!

Now, only Sunny is left to fill the space Bo has left behind in his family’s heart. But as all dog owners know, our beloved pets stay with us forever, if only in spirit. Rest in peace, sweet Bo.
