Dr Scott Miller, Resident Vet for cat litter brand, Natusan, has given up some top tips to ensure your trip goes swimmingly.
So if you're thinking of taking a staycation with your pet this summer, here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Plan ahead and check local vets
If you’re taking your pup or kitty away with you then it’s a wise idea to familiarise yourself with the area that you’re planning to visit and work out where the nearest veterinary surgery is. We’re sure you won’t need it but better to be safe than sorry.
2. Don’t forget the litter tray!
Cats are creatures of habits and this includes going to the loo! Take along your cat’s usual litter and litter tray so there are no unexpected accidents.
3. Make sure microchip details and vaccinations are up to date
There can be few things more stressful than losing your pup or cat when you’re far away from home. Make sure that your pet’s microchip details are up to date and double-check vaccinations to be on the safe side too.
4. Get your pet car-ready
If you’re driving to your location then make sure your pet has a few test rides beforehand so that they’re comfortable in the vehicle. A cat carrier and a dog seatbelt are highly recommended too.
5. Don’t forget their favourite toy or blanket
Most pets have a blanket, a bed or a toy that they love. Take a few of your pet’s comforts with you to help them get used to their new home.
And most of all, have fun! We may be counting down the days until foreign travel is back on the cards but in the meantime let’s make the most of travelling with our four-legged friends.
