Dog owner Jerzy Kopa knows his two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Diego better than anyone else. So when Diego started letting out some warning barks during a recent walk through the forest, Jerzy knew something was wrong.

Jerzy let keen-nosed Diego take the lead and followed the pup through the trees and thick undergrowth. Diego took his owner to an old septic tank deep in the forest.

Jerzy walked over to the edge of the tank, peered down in the darkness, and saw two sad eyes begging for help!

Diego knew exactly where he was going

The desperate eyes belonged to Golden Retriever Gucio, who'd been missing for over 30 days. Jerzy and Diego ran for help, returning with a ladder and a few local people shortly after.

Together they managed to pull Gucio out of the hole safely. They then carried the pup to a nearby veterinary surgery. Vets think Gucio spent weeks trapped in the tank and only survived by drinking the dirty water.

Gucio is on the mend

Vets managed to track down Gucio's owner, Paweł Kałuziak. Mr Kaluziak was delighted to see his beloved friend again. And Gucio was also pretty happy, although the exhausted pooch could only give his human a few licks.

Gucio is currently making a slow but steady recovery.  He hasn't started going for proper walks just yet. But when he does, Gucio has got a very special playdate booked in with the amazing little terrier who helped him get back home! Well done, Diego. Always trust a dog's nose!
