When neighbours spotted an elderly dog tied up, they assumed the worse and reported the owner for animal cruelty. But, the truth was far from anything they imagined.

There’s nothing more important in this world to Keith Simmons than his three Beagles: Prince, Bear and Isis. While he goes to work he leaves Bear and Isis in the backyard while elderly dog Prince waits in a fenced run.

Well-meaning neighbours recently spotted Prince in the small enclosure, took pictures (which they shared to social media) and reported Mr Simmons for animal cruelty.

The wrong end of the stick

The images quickly went viral and Beaufort County Animal Control were informed of the seemingly maltreated dog.

But, when animal control arrived, they realised the truth was far from what the well-meaning neighbours assumed.

It turns out that Prince was classified as a "dangerous dog" by the courts after biting three runners. It was recommended that Prince be euthanised but Keith loves his dog and knows that tying him up is the only way of keeping others safe while keeping him alive.

Keith explained that he would love a bigger and better pen for his dogs, but simply didn’t have the money for a new one.

The kindness of strangers

But, thanks to the magic of the internet, an Animal Control shelter heard of Keith's plight and offered to build a new enclosure free of charge for Prince.

The new enclosure is big enough for all three dogs.

We wish Keith, Prince, Bear and Isis all the very best for the future!
