In December 2019 Kelly Shade experienced something that all dog lovers fear. Her beloved fur baby went missing. Kelly thinks the 6-year old-year-old Pittie, Gracie, bolted out of a door left open by construction workers doing some work around the house.
Kelly searched the local neighbourhood, but there was no sign of the missing pooch. And when Gracie didn't return that night, her heartbroken mum launched a full missing dog campaign.
Will Gracie ever come home?
She put up posters, sent out calls for help across social media, and contacted all the nearby animal rescue centres. But nothing worked. And as the weeks turned into months, Kelly was forced to accept that Gracie might be gone forever.
Fast forward a year later, and a rescue worker named Katie Campbell received a call about a stray Pittie scrounging for scraps of food. After tempting the pup back to the shelter with a tasty meal, Katie was delighted to discover its microchip.
And yes, you've guessed it - this was Gracie the missing Pittie. Katie called the owner straight away, who sobbed with relief.
Campbell even drove Gracie back to her true home, where she got to witness the heartwarming reunion.
A sweet reunion
"The second she sniffed Kelly it was just sheer excitement," said Campbell "Then she started wiggling all over and jumping up and down. It was the most wonderful thing to see."
And although Kelly is delighted to have her baby back, she's still coming to terms with this unlikely story.
"It still seems a little surreal," said Kelly. "Even now I look at her and think, 'Wow, its actually happened. Gracie is finally home!"
