A sharp-eyed worker at a Russian recycling plant (quite literally) let the cat out of the bag after he saved a stray kitten from a certain and gruesome death.

The unnamed worker was halfway through a long shift at the recycling plant in the Ulyanovsk region 500 miles outside of Moscow. But despite the brain fade from spending hours watching trash whizz across the conveyer belt, this guy was still sharp enough to save the kitten's life.

Footage from the plant's CCTV cameras shows the man hitting the conveyor belts' emergency stop button while his work colleagues carry on sorting through the rubbish. They look at him with confused expressions - as if to say, "what's this guy doing now?"

But their confusion quickly turns to surprise when he pulls a kitten out of a plastic bag that was heading straight for the trash compacter.

Our hero, Mikhail Tukash, was interviewed by several local TV stations. He also received an official letter of commendation, although it seems like saving the cat's life was reward enough for Mikhail.

Speaking to one reporter, Mikhail said:

"The cat didn't meow, and the bag didn't move either. I don't know how I spotted it. I'm just glad I did. Maybe it was instinct."

What's the Russian word for lucky?

The cat now has a forever home at the Environmental Ministry building in Ulyanovsk, where the staff have promised to look after him together.

They've also launched a competition to help find a name for this fortunate kitty. How about Schastlivyy? That's Russian for Lucky!
