Despite the muted New Year’s celebrations, there’s no doubt that the start of 2021 seems to be every bit as tough as the end of 2020.

But, thankfully, us pet owners have a little help from our furry friends.

A revealing poll

Pet company Purina carried out a poll amongst pet owners and have found that, more than ever, we’re turning to our pets for comfort during these worrying times.

The poll revealed that a third of pet owners are talking to their pets more than ever before with two-fifths saying their pets were helping them stay upbeat and a quarter naming their pet as their closest confidant.

Chatting with pets is both normal and healthy. Airing our worries can help us to work through things that are upsetting us and having a sympathetic (furry) ear is priceless.

Topics on the table

The study asked pet owners what they’d discussed with their four-legged pal and had a variety of answers from “my views on Donald Trump” to “How I need a wax”!

With the new, stricter lockdown, our bond with our pets is only set to grow. And, even though daily walks are still permitted, it’s likely that we’ll be home more than ever for the next few months.

Thanks for being there furry friends - we promise to return the favour with treats and fuss!
