Just like it does with children, reading can have a calming effect on animals.
That's why the Animal Humane Society in the U.S. introduced their Rescue Readers programme where children are invited to come and read to shelter animals.
While the reading sessions help boost a child's reading, it can also teach them the importance of caring for animals. For the animal, it teaches them important social skills that can help them get adopted. One particular reading session caught on film highlighted the benefits of reading to a shelter animal.
Finn is one of the programme's Rescue Readers, and he came along to a shelter one day to read a story to an adorable feline, also called Finn. Finn (the cat) is a very affectionate feline who loves cuddles and attention, so was thrilled to meet his human namesake.
As soon as Finn (the boy) began reading his story, the cat snuggled up close to him. Finn, the cat, kept touching the boy's back with his paw and even kissed him as he read. Once the reading session was over, the two Finns spent the rest of the time cuddling and playing together.
The good news is that a lovely family adopted Finn, the cat, just two days later.
